Vitamin C: The Super Vitamin

in blog, nutrition on 02/12/21

This vitamin is always talked about, but do you really understand what this vitamin is for, or why you should take it? Vitamin C is also called ascorbic acid, and its job is to work as an antioxidant. Vitamin C is a really important substance that is needed for the body in order to survive. As an antioxidant, it is used to lower the amount of damage that is done to the bodies cells.

The damage is caused by loose free radical cells in a person’s body. Animals have the ability to produce and adjust, as well as maintain the amount of vitamin c that is in their body. Animals that have fallen ill are able to release up to ten times the normal amount of vitamin C and gather it inside their bodies. We as humans, however, can not and have to consume vitamin C through food, drink or supplements.

The Benefits of Vitamin C

The main purpose of vitamin C is to help keep your body’s immune system working and healthy. In case you did not know, your body’s immune system works hard at fighting off the most common diseases, such as a cold, and even helps to prevent more serious diseases such as cancer. It is vitally important that you keep your immune system working properly. If you don’t, you may not like the results of what happens. Not to mention, there are so many ways to get the vitamin c you need, so there really is no excuse not to get the amount that you need.

Vitamin C is water-soluble, which means that it can be dissolved in any drink, it is found in dozens of foods, so you really do not have to do much to obtain the vitamin c you need.

One of the most common places to obtain vitamin c is from natural orange juice or plain oranges. There are a lot of items that you can find in just about any store that will even have vitamin c listed in the ingredients or on the packaging in bold. There are many benefits, some of which are obvious, others, not so much. Vitamin C has the ability to promote strength in your body’s blood cells as well as helping your body’s circulatory system stay healthy. Regulation of the levels of cholesterol in your body’s bloodstream.

What that means, in more simple terms, is that you have less of a chance of having a heart attack. Benefits from being an antioxidant also assist your stress levels in your body, and assist with preventing chronic fatigue. Your body’s adrenal glands, which help to carry the higher level of vitamin c in your body, and for a good reason. They are able to release the most oxidants as well as free radicals when your body becomes stressed. Vitamin C is basically a detox for your body!

We All Need Vitamin C

It should be obvious, but everyone in the world needs vitamin c in their body. This is the way to ensure that your body is healthy and will keep your body strong. Unfortunately, vitamin c has been polluted by the way the earth has been treated.

Toxins, chemicals, and other similar issues have made their way into the soil, the same oil that vitamin c, and all our foods and nutrients are grown in. USFDA Scientists have discovered that less than 30% of the vitamin c that was in broccoli 30 years ago remains still today. It goes to show how much more we need vitamin c in our bodies, and how much less we are obtaining from our diet.

The good news? There is still a lot of natural sources for vitamin c and ascorbic acid supplements available on the market today. If you need a source for vitamin c, check your local grocery store and you should easily find some. You can take it in pill form, in a type of shake, or in the food you eat, but be sure to get enough! It is also simple to find the ingredients online to get better discounts and buy in bulk.

How Much is Enough?

The answer, it depends. This will depend heavily on your personal health. A healthier person will not need as much as someone who is struggling with an illness. It would always be wise to take a good amount of vitamin c, however, regardless of whether you are healthy or ill. It may seem like a thing of the pirate’s age, but scurvy is still a serious risk for those that do not get enough vitamin c.

The normal amount of vitamin c that is required for a body to function is less than 100 milligrams. However, if you chain smoke cigarettes, this amount will leave you with a vitamin deficiency. You will also need more vitamin c if you are facing a serious event for your health such as cancer,  a stroke, a heart attack, or other serious illnesses. Be sure to remember this when you walk past the vitamin aisle!

How Should You Take Vitamin C?

The easiest way to take Vitamin C is from the food that you eat that are rich in the supplement.

Some of these foods are grapefruits, cherries, mangoes, strawberries, oranges, guavas, broccoli, limes, pineapple, dark leafy greens, cauliflower, lemons, bananas, green peas,  papaya, sweet peppers, kiwi, melon, and tomatoes. Those very same healthy foods your body needs to begin with. There is at least one or two things above that you like, admit it. Plus, there are a lot of other nutrients that these foods provide that make them worth having.

The real problem is that to get enough milligrams of Vitamin C for your body you would need to eat almost 30 of these foods in one sitting. Since that is not possible, you should supplement with vitamin c pills and supplements.
