How do I know if I have a specific vitamin deficiency?

is easy to know when your body is looking to tell you something. It becomes more obvious with various signs that your body is looking to warn you with, some of which are obvious, others, not so much. There are many ways to wind up with a vitamin deficiency in this age of processed foods. The disease may not be a necessary fear now, but you may have parts that do not function properly, due to the fact that vitamins affect all biochemical reactions in the body. There are a lot of signs that you may have a vitamin deficiency.

A deficiency in iron, B vitamins, or Zinc can cause you to get cracks along with the corners of your mouth. A deficiency of B vitamins can also cause a red rash, that appears scaly, as well as hair loss. A and D vitamin deficiencies can cause bumps that appear that are acne-like, that appear on the thighs, arms, cheeks, and other places. Muscle cramps, aches, pains, and other problems all affect your body due to deficiencies. 

Every vitamin deficiency has a sign or symptom that comes along with it. You can see a lot of those symptoms here. If your body is acting a little off or in a way that concerns you, you may want to see a doctor, get a vitamin deficiency test (which is available for purchase online for free or an official test online as well.)

President-Elect of the  DC Metro Area Dietetic Association, Tricia L. Psota, Ph.D., RDN, says, “Nutrient deficiencies alter bodily functions and processes at the most basic cellular level, these processes include water balance, enzyme function, nerve signaling, digestion, and metabolism. Resolving these deficiencies is important for optimal growth, development, and function.” Cleveland Clinic registered dietitian, Kate Pattom, MEd, RD, says 

“For example, calcium and vitamin D deficiencies can cause osteopenia or osteoporosis, two conditions marked by brittle bones,” And inadequate iron can cause anemia, which zaps your energy.”

Knowing your body is one of the best ways to determine if there is a problem.

For example, if yesterday your arm felt fine, but today it ached and felt numb, you may have a problem. It is easy to take your health for granted and wait until it may be too late to get answers. When you feel something is off, that is when you should ask a doctor for help in determining the cause, and what the best course of action may be to help discover a cure or treatment. 

The best way to find out is to be diagnosed by your doctor, then researching how to naturally increase your body’s intake of the vitamin that you are lacking. Be sure to ask your doctor questions about what you should add, increase, or decrease in your diet in order for you to fully understand what your body needs. Do not attempt to diagnose yourself, as this can be dangerous, even fatal if you are not careful about how you go about it.
